The Year 2026 Hailed as the Year of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. However, their prevalence has seemingly increased in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are serious amphibian adventures.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this trend, I undertook a thorough analysis into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The data paint a clear picture: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's rising status in the broader culture is somewhat visible elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the explosion in gaming appears particularly strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.
Several the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year yet.
When these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
