With an announcement that mixes generosity with stringent conditions, the United States has pledged $2 billion for UN humanitarian operations. But, this contribution was accompanied by a blunt admonition for the global organization: it must "adapt or die."
A Significant Announcement Amid Broader Budget Reductions
This commitment was declared amid major cuts in American funding for global aid. Further cuts are also anticipated from other key donors such as European nations. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, delivered the statement alongside the United Nations' top humanitarian official.
"These funds will be crucial for saving millions of lives," said the United Nations' humanitarian chief. Yet, the $2 billion constitutes just a small portion of the United States' historical spending, which were estimated at around $17 billion in the recent past.
Funding with Specific Conditions
This new American funding comes with without restrictions. It is earmarked for just 17 nations, such as Haiti, Syria, and Sudan. Notably, Afghanistan and Yemen are explicitly denied funding.
The US official explained this decision by citing concerns that there, aid money were being diverted to militant groups. "President Trump will never tolerate any amount of taxpayers' money supporting terrorist groups," he asserted.
Furthermore, the stipulations explicitly rule out spending on initiatives focused on global warming, which were described as not "essential for survival" and not in "American interests."

Issuing a harsh ultimatum, the US official warned the UN that it must "evolve or become obsolete." He stated that the US "piggy bank is not open to agencies that just want to cling to the old system."
