During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Core Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
