Oxford Union President-Elect Ousted Due to Charlie Kirk Comments
The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that followed his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.
The vote against George Abaraonye achieved the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the death of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in Utah.
According to sources, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.
The president-elect is also reported to have written in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.
Election Results
The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with results announced on this week.
Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The notice stated that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in following the society's regulations.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.
In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".
His statement categorically refuted that any representative appointed by George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The student maintained that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.
His comment added that George was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Critics have argued that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".
External Responses
On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The message criticized the union of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent".
The statement warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had earlier condemned the student's comments after the activist's killing and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the union in spring.
