Old Fishing Nets from French Coast Transform into Crucial Protection Against Russian Drones in Ukraine

On the port areas of French fishing ports, piles of discarded fishing nets stand as a regular occurrence.

The usable duration of deep-sea fishing nets generally extends between 12-24 months, following this period they become deteriorated and irreparable.

Currently, this marine-grade mesh, previously employed for catching ocean species from the marine bottom, is finding new application for another type of catch: hostile aerial vehicles.

Charitable Effort Transforms Marine Waste

A Breton charity has dispatched two deliveries of nets extending 280 kilometers to the war-torn nation to safeguard soldiers and civilians along the frontline where conflict intensifies.

Russia employs low-cost aerial vehicles equipped with explosives, controlling them by distance operation for distances of up to 25 kilometers.

"Over the last two years, the war has transformed. Before we didn't even think about drones, but now it's a aerial combat conflict," commented a charity logistics coordinator.

Strategic Use of Fishing Nets

Ukrainian forces use the nets to create passageways where aerial vehicle blades become trapped. This method has been compared to web-building predators trapping prey in a mesh.

"Military representatives explained they cannot use generic mesh material. They received quite a few that are ineffective," the representative explained.

"The materials we provide are made of specialized material and used for ocean trawling to catch strong marine species which are quite powerful and hit the nets with a force similar to that of a drone."

Expanding Uses

Initially deployed by medical personnel safeguarding treatment facilities near the frontline, the nets are now implemented on roads, crossings, the medical facility access points.

"It's astonishing that such basic material works so well," observed the charity president.

"There is no shortage of marine gear in this region. It presents a challenge to know where to send them as various companies that process the material have closed."

Operational Hurdles

The aid association was established after expatriate citizens sought help from the founders requesting help regarding clothing, food and medical supplies for Ukraine.

A team of helpers have delivered two truck shipments of relief supplies 2,300km to the border crossing point.

"When we learned that Ukraine sought protective gear, the coastal residents responded immediately," declared the charity director.

Aerial Combat Development

Russia is using real-time visual vehicles similar to those on the commercial market that can be piloted by wireless command and are then armed with explosives.

Hostile controllers with live camera streams steer them to their objectives. In certain regions, Ukrainian forces report that no movement occurs without capturing the focus of clusters of "killer" suicide aircraft.

Defensive Strategies

The trawling material are stretched between poles to form netting tunnels or used to cover trenches and equipment.

Defense unmanned aircraft are also outfitted with fragments of material to deploy against opposition vehicles.

By July this year, Ukraine was facing more than 500 drones each twenty-four hour period.

International Aid

Substantial quantities of old nets have also been contributed by fishers in Nordic countries.

A former fisheries committee president declared that regional fishermen are particularly willing to assist the military campaign.

"They experience satisfaction to know their discarded equipment is going to assist in protection," he informed media.

Funding Challenges

The charity has exhausted the funds to transport further gear this year and negotiations are occurring for Ukraine to dispatch vehicles to collect the material.

"We shall assist obtain the gear and load them but we don't have the monetary resources to continue running convoys ourselves," commented the organization representative.

Practical Restrictions

A defense forces representative stated that protective mesh corridors were being installed across the conflict area, about three-quarters of which is now stated as captured and administered by enemy troops.

She explained that enemy drone pilots were increasingly finding ways to circumvent the protection.

"Mesh does not represent a panacea. They are just a particular aspect of safeguarding from drones," she stressed.

A former produce merchant expressed that the people he interacted with were affected by the help from maritime regions.

"The fact that those in the fishing industry the far region of Europe are sending nets to support their defensive measures has brought a few tears to their eyes," he finished.
