The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
