A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
